Water, Oil, and Cream- A Note on Keeping Your Hair Moisturized

One of the most common battles of having natural hair involves moisture. Or rather, the lack thereof! If you have done your research, you know that naturally curly hair tends to be drier than straight hair.
(There is already a plethora of this kind of information out there in cyberspace, so if at any time you would like to know the science behind the things you read on this blog, I’ll do my best to include the links. But I won’t go into explicit detail here.)

Let’s get started!

Why I'm Not a Product Junkie (Anymore)

I still remember the day I found out about the curly hair market. It was right around the time I discovered natural hair's biggest resource and biggest culprit of product junkyism-

Youtube.

I was so excited to learn about all the styles you could accomplish with naturally curly hair. I promised myself that only the finest products would touch my head and as soon as I could, I ran out and spent an obscene amount of money on a very well-known line of hair products. As if that wasn't enough, I then went to a health/vitamin store to buy "pure" and "organic" coconut oil and other products that I saw being raved about on Youtube. Don't get me wrong, the products were wonderful, but when they ran out, I knew there was no way I could spend that amount of money on hair products again.

Curl, Where You Been?

Hey there, my curly friends!

I didn't want you to think I'd dropped off the face of the earth, so I thought I would stop by and give you an update on what's been going on with this site and with yours truly.

I originally began this blog solely for a class project. (I got an A- in the class, which sucks!) But I digress.

Being peeved about my grade, I originally decided to screw this blog and delete it or leave it hanging in cyberspace for all eternity.

But lately I've been thinking that maybe I shouldn't do that. Perhaps there are folks out there who want to hear what I have to say about my hair, and curly hair in general. Perhaps some person I have never met will stumble across this blog and wonder why I didn't continue to deliver on my promise to create a curly haven?

I don't want to disappoint, so...TheCurlyRefuge is BACK, baby! I will continue to update this blog as ideas and inspiration come to me.

Be Blessed With All The Best=)

All Curls Are Created Equal...Right?

One of the ladies in the CurlTalk video stated it the best, "There's a whole range of curly!"

The various hair-typing systems have been a source of debate among curly heads for over a decade.Of the different systems in existence, two rise in apparent opposition.

CurlTalk-Episode 1

It seems as though everywhere I go, I bump into ladies with the most lovely heads of hair. And it makes me wonder if what goes on inside of their head is as fascinating as the outside of that curly head? Do we curly girls share the same thoughts and attitudes about our hair? Whether we want to admit it or not, much of what we see in the mass media are women with long, straight tresses. I decided to go on a mission to find out exactly how women in modern American society are feeling about curly hair. Some of the women are close friends and acquaintances, and some are complete strangers. These are the questions each woman was asked:

NameThatCurl-Esperanza Spalding

If you know anything about music, surely you recognize this newly famous curly head. Esperanza Spalding exploded onto the big time music scene when she unexpectedly won the Best New Artist Grammy award earlier this year.  At only 25 years old she has mastered more than five instruments, and is one of the youngest professors to teach at Berklee College of Music.

But enough about that. Check out her CURLS!

A Few of My Favorite Things-Edition 1

I discovered this product by accident on my first venture into a beauty supply store. It smelled delicious, so I purchased it on a whim. When I got into my car, I popped open the jar and scooped out a creamy fingerful and rubbed it onto my scalp...

Welcome To The Curly Refuge!

Before you read further, take this quick test:

Hold your hand out in front of you, fingers splayed. Place that hand on your head, and rub your fingers around on your scalp.

How does it feel?

Be honest, did your fingers get stuck? If they did, chances are your hair is curly. And if your hair is curly, then this is the place for you.

This blog was created to be a place of peace and support for those who have chosen to embrace the naturally curly texture of their hair. Whether you have always embraced it, or are new in your natural hair journey, you will find all you need to have a healthy head on your shoulders, inside and out.

That being said...enjoy your time here =)
