All Curls Are Created Equal...Right?

One of the ladies in the CurlTalk video stated it the best, "There's a whole range of curly!"

The various hair-typing systems have been a source of debate among curly heads for over a decade.Of the different systems in existence, two rise in apparent opposition. The first is the system created by Andre Walker. The argument among curly-haired women, namely those with tightly curled hair or Afro-textured hair, is that this system creates a hierachy of "good" and "bad" hair. Others contend that the system is informative in helping men and women to understand the texture of their hair.

The other system is referred to as the L.O.I.S. method. Each letter in the acronym represents the shape of one's hair strand. For example, the "I" represents hair that is naturally straight.

Why were these systems created at all? Simple, because while all curls are created equally beautiful, all curls are not the same. The hair products and methods that work for you may not work for the curly head next to you. This is an important factor to consider, especially for those who are new to the curly world. Many newly naturals can attest to feelings of frustration and anxiety when attempting to purchase products or try new styles.

Regardless of what method you choose, or whether you choose one at all is entirely up to you. I encourage you to do your research and make an informed decision. No matter your choice, remember that your hair is attractive and an important part of YOU.

Take care of it.
